Well it didn’t take long for me to fall behind in my blogs. It has been a hectic week at work and I have been sick with a stubborn cough. Had the weekend off so missed my long runs, which is disappointing. Ran well today and ready to get back into it.
A weekly account of what i will be going through for my first marathon. Can i do it?

Running in Canberra
Not a bad first week, feel fit and ready for next week. Still having trouble sorting out my social life and fitting in training, especially when we are out of town or having people visit us. This week my training days altered a lot and I feel the same will happen next week when Becs parents come to Melbourne for a visit. I enjoyed running in Canberra especially with Bec on Saturday. It was nice to run with someone and enjoy it as well. Looking forward to the weeks ahead.

What my first week looks like? Easy?
My suggested timetable for week 1.
Session Day and Location Outline
Steady | Suggested Tuesday | 35-40min at steady pace |
Intervals | Thursday | 6-8 X 400m repeats with a break in between |
Tempo | Saturday | 30min. Building to hard for last 15min |
Long Run | Sunday | 60min over flat |
It looks pretty easy after what I have been doing over the last couple of weeks. I am glad it is easy training to start off as I am going to be busy this week. On Tuesday I have the socceroos match at 7pm so I might have to run early in the morning. Depending on the weather I might try and tackle that run outside. It is starting to get really cold in the morning here in Melbourne so will have to decide on the day. Thursdays run will be hard to do as we are off to Canberra that night, which I am looking forward to. Looks like some early morning running for me this week. It will be good however to run around the lake in Canberra on Saturday and Sunday. (cold there again but have done it before) I might see if I can get Bec out for an early run.

Not Happy
Two running sessions completed over the last two days. Legs are not feeling the best still, after the long run on Monday. I am a little angry with myself as I stop short of my goal today of running 45mins. I was hurting in the legs and made the excuse of stopping so I don’t injury myself, ended up completing 30mins. Don’t know if this was a good idea or not. I did some leg weights to compensate. I plan to have Friday off and start official training on Saturday. By then I have think my legs will feel better.

Viewers YES
Wow I have had some viewers, I think or could it be from by girlfriend (thanks Bec). Anyway still don’t start official program till the weekend but I have been putting in the km’s. Yesterday I managed to have one of my longest training runs. A total of 1:40, I think I stayed out long to avoid completing my school reports. Felt good, however slow but for my first marathon I am not too fussed about my times. I can’t forget I pumped some iron after also, giving my skinny arms a bit of definition. I run again today and hit struggle town, (I can’t believe I am saying struggle town NOW, um Matt you haven’t started yet, imagine what it will be like in a months time) legs were like jelly and wasn’t feeling the best due to not eating after work (bad mistake). I still managed to complete my target of 30mins. I guess I have to push through these types of day as I know it will get worse. That’s why I plan to head to the gym tomorrow to do some interval training. Fingers crossed the legs are back to normal.

My First Marathon
I don’t know why I have decided to create a blog about my marathon journey. I always seem to be busy at work and I am enjoying my social life in Melbourne on the weekends also. O I can’t forget the time I have to start putting into my running for the Melbourne marathon in October. So where am I going to find the time, however I will endeavor to try and make this work, I don’t believe many people will be reading this anyway and I plan to make a post at least weekly, that can’t be too hard can it?
I have participated in a couple of sporting events over the years. I was in a Half Ironman with a team (with the SJ crew) and completed the bike leg and I have completed a half marathon (just), but I was never happy with what I achieve in those events. To be honest I never trained the house down maybe the reason I am doing this is to develop an avenue where I can keep track of my training and make sure I put 100% into the training. Also thinking about it now I don’t have an excuse of having no time to write a blog (wow this blog writing is changing my mind set already) as my girlfriend is developing a fledging career and works numerous hours and still writes two blogs, one is a daily update.
So here goes post 1 which will be short as I haven’t official started any training. I have been running in the last month to get my fitness back and completed the Run for the Kids 14km course which I was extremely happy with. Beating the time you set to achieve will do that I guess. By the weekend I hope to have a good idea how I will be tackling my first marathon and completed my first session. I’m looking forward to it.
